Brazilian President Lula da Silva worked directly for the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) to grant a US$1 billion loan to Argentina, in an operation with the clear proposal of helping the leftist candidate Sergio Massa and, at the same time, halt the advance of Javier Milei, a name on the right that is leading the voting intention polls in the first round of the Argentine election, which takes place in three weeks.
This type of action is considered illegal under Brazilian law and may become grounds for impeachment of the President of the Republic.
The information was first published by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo on 10/4/2023. The report also says that, with this endorsement from CAF, Sergio Massa reached a new agreement to release US$7.5 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Argentina is going through a deep economic crisis, with inflation of more than 100% per year and no dollar reserves. Hence the urgent need for international assistance.
The Brazilian government, which has a close relationship with the current leftist Argentine administration, led by Alberto Fernández, fears the victory of Javier Milei, who in Brazil has Jair Bolsonaro as an ally.
