In 2001, an investigation showed that Hamas and Hezbollah received at least US$50 million from Arab extremist groups over three years.
These groups are from FOZ DO IGUAÇU, a city in the interior of Brazil, where the state-owned Itaipu company is located.
In 2006, an article published in the newspaper Tribuna revealed that the Arab community in Foz do Iguaçu has members who approve of Hamas and Fatah.
In July 2010, the Lula Government donated aproximately US$5 million to the Palestinian Authority in Gaza, through Celso Amorim.
In February of the same year, however, Amorim was appointed as Itaipu’s advisor by Lula.
Celso Amorim, current Chief Advisor of the Special Advisory to the President of the Republic of Brazil, is the person that wrote about the “importance” of Hamas for Palestine in January 2024.
In 2021, ten deputies of Lula da Silva’s party signed a note arguing that Hamas should NOT be considered terrorist.
Among them was Enio Verri, who was appointed Director of ITAIPU (Foz do Iguaçu) by Lula da Silva in March of that year.
In January 2024, Verri curiously approved an increase in advertising budget for Itaipu, reaching aproximately US$20 million per year.
The question remains: why does a state-owned hydroelectric plant, which is a monopoly and has no competitors, need so much money for advertising?
In February 2024, Itaipu’s counselor, who is also PT treasurer, called Israel a “murderer” and that it “does not deserve to be a State”.
All of this raises some questions that deserve further investigation:
- Why is Lula da Silva’s party allocating so much money to Itaipu?
- Why are Lula da Silva’s supporting politicians sympathetic to Hamas constantly involved with Itaipu?
- Are extremist Arab groups in Foz do Iguaçu receiving money from Itaipu? And if so, do they continue sending it to Hamas?
