On September 12th, Governor Wilson Lima declared an environmental emergency in Amazonas in an attempt to mitigate the impacts of illegal deforestation and wildfires across the state.
According to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Amazonas recorded 3,925 wildfires in the first ten days of September. As a result, this is already the second-worst September since 2021. In the year-to-date, the state has registered 11,736 wildfires.
Just as a reminder, in 2022, while running for the Presidency of Brazil, Lula da Silva made as a top priority on his agenda the protection of the Amazon, ending deforestation, and wildfires. However, the opposite has been occurring: wildfires and the destruction of the Amazon have increased and are reaching unprecedented levels during his tenure.
